Delaware Megan's Law

Being named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was enacted into federal law in 1995. Megan's Law makes it mandatory for all states develop a procedure for notifying local residents when a sexual offender is relocated into their area.
Megan was just seven years old when a previously convicted sexual offender that was living accross the street from her family, kidnapped, rapped, and killed her. It was decided that if her family or other residents in the communtiy had been alerted that a previous sexual offender was residing in their neighborhood, this heinous act could've been thwarted. With those thoughts, the U.S. Congress passed the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", also known as Megan's Law, without any protests.
Since the law has been put into effect, Delaware has strived to protect its residents the most current information regarding convicted sexual offenders and their whereabouts. The legislation has proven that while sexual offenses are still a problem in this country, acts committed by prior offenders are on a downturn.
