Delaware Megan's Law
Named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was put into federal law in 1995. Megan's Law demands that every state
put a method in place for notifying the general public when a sexual offender is relocated into their area.
Megan was merely seven years old when a repeat sexual predator that was living accross the street from her family, abducted,
rapped, and killed her. It was decided that had her family or other residents in the communtiy had been aware that a convicted
sexual offender was housed in their neighborhood, this heinous act could've been avoided. On that train of thought, the U.S. Congress
enacted the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", aka Megan's Law, without any protests.
Since the law was put into effect, Delaware has gone out of its way to protect its supplying the most recent information
relating to previous sexual offenders and their current residency. The law has confirmed that though sexual offenses are still a
danger in the U.S., acts committed by past offenders are on a regression.
The information obtainable by the institution of Megan's Law has continued to be a critical benefit in keeping one's family
